The All New Kia Seltos
Debuting for the 2021 model year, the Kia Seltos has immediately stood out in the subcompact crossover SUV sector. Not only does it have the sporty styling that has come to characterize Kia vehicle, but it is also a very spacious ride with a top-notch interior and great fuel economy. This vehicle is split into the following trim levels:
LX: Representing the Seltos’s base level, the LX provides two cloth-trimmed seats to seat up to five people. With 26.6 cubic feet of storage room behind the 60/40 split-folding rear seats, which can be adjusted to maximize said space at 62.8 cubic feet, the Seltos provides the largest cargo hold in the subcompact SUV class. The powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 146 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque and a continuously variable transmission. Coupled with the standard front-wheel drivetrain, this configuration produces the vehicle’s peak fuel economy numbers: 29 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. These are some of the best numbers in the subcompact class. Locking and unlocking the doors is made easy with the remote keyless entry system, and an 8-inch touchscreen combines the following infotainment features:
• Six speakers
• AM/FM radio
• Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming
• Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration
• Siri Eyes Free for voice commands
• USB port for playing media from portable devices
For driver assistance, the 2021 Seltos includes a rearview camera to produce a video image when moving in reverse. Six airbags—two frontal airbags, two side impact airbags, and two side curtain airbags—installed throughout the cabin for deployment when there’s a crash.
S: The S is where Kia introduces the option of replacing the front-wheel drivetrain with all-wheel drive for maximizing traction on slippery surfaces. Also introduced are leather wrapping on the steering wheel and partial synthetic leather seat trim with blue contrast stitching. Driver assistance is given a boost with the following additions:
• Forward collision assist
• Driver attention warning
• High beam assist
• Lane departure warning
• Lane keeping assist
• Lane following assist
EX: At the mid-level EX trim tier, the 2021 Seltos is upgraded from partial synthetic leather trim to full synthetic leather upholstery, and the front seats gain front-seat heating. The EX gets more comfort and convenience features, which include the following:
• Automatic climate control
• Wireless device charging
• Two additional USB ports
• Proximity keyless entry and push-button engine start (instead of remote keyless entry)
A blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic assist is added on the EX for better driver assistance.
S TURBO: It is at the aptly named S Turbo level where the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is replaced by a leaner-yet-meaner 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which produces 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. That’s 29 more horsepower and 63 more lb-ft of torque than the base engine; consequently, the S Turbo is an improved accelerator over the LX, S, and EX. In addition, the engine is glued to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Note, though, that the S Turbo reverts from the full synthetic leather seat trim to the partial synthetic leather, and it loses the 10-way power adjustability on the driver’s seat.
SX TURBO: Also powered by the 1.6-liter turbo-four, the range-topping SX Turbo has unique features that put it above the S Turbo. Infotainment peaks with the following additions and enhancements:
• Eight-speaker Bose premium stereo system with a sound-connected mood lamp (in place of the six-speaker setup)
• Navigation system
• Trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio
• UVO link for remote connectivity
• 10.25-inch touchscreen (instead of the 8-inch)
Full synthetic leather seat trim and driver-side 10-way power adjustability return at the SX Turbo. The rearview mirror gets auto-dimming ability so that you are not disturbed by headlight glare from the vehicle behind you. For driver assistance, the Seltos gets adaptive cruise control to automatically set a safe following distance and highway driving assist to reduce your burden on the highway by controlling steering and speed functions.
